Most Beautiful Places in Central Italy (With Relaxing Spots)

Italy is one of the world’s greatest natural attractions, and you can find the most beautiful regions in Italy. Your time in Italy will not be completed in weeks or months. Italy amassed a list of the world’s top natural attractions, most beautiful places, most historical sites, and safest countries to visit. According to that, we couldn’t skip Italy’s Central area in our “Top Regions to Visit & Relax in Italy” list. We offer the best collection in Central Italy for your easy selection and planning.

Central Italy has everything you could want from an Italian vacation. After you’ve seen all there is to see in Rome, with its historical treasures and crowded streets, it’s time to go out of the city and see what medieval Perugia and Assisi have to offer.

Orvieto is a beautiful town, positioned spectacularly on a rocky cliff, and the perfect place to enjoy some of the region’s notably sharp white wines. On the other side of the Appenines, you’ll find a completely different landscape to explore in the regions of Abruzzo and Molise. The Alpine peaks of the Gran Sasso, the beauty of the national parks, the medieval hill towns, and the long stretch of Adriatic coast in Abruzzo and Molise are a welcome change from the usual tourist spots.

01 Tuscany (Toscana)

Tuscany

Geographically, You can find Tuscany in the heart of Italy. I think everyone should visit Tuscany at least once in their lifetime. The region of Tuscany is the most well-known in Italy. The Renaissance artwork and the beautiful countryside are world-renowned. Florence and Siena are two of the many beautiful cities in Italy, and Elba island and Pisa’s leaning bell tower are two of the many tourist attractions in the region.

Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is home to some of the world’s most famous works of Renaissance architecture and art, including Michelangelo’s “David” statue and Botticelli’s works in the Uffizi Gallery and the Duomo basilica. Its varied landscape features the Apennine Mountains, the sandy beaches of Elba in the Tyrrhenian Sea, and the rolling hills of olive gardens and vineyards in Chianti.

02 Umbria

Umbria

The region of Umbria is one of my favorites in Italy and is located in central Italy. Umbria shares land borders with Tuscany, Lazio, and Le Marche. Medieval hill towns, dense forests, and regional cuisine, mainly hunted for food truffles and wines, have earned the country’s nickname “green heart.”

Umbria is one of Italy’s most beautiful and underappreciated regions, thanks to its verdant countryside and awesome medieval towns. Hilltop The medieval Palazzo dei Priori in Perugia, the regional capital, now houses the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria.  The region of Umbria is well-known as the home of numerous holy men and women. San Francesco d’Assisi’s Basilica is certainly worth your time, but so are the nearby cities of Perugia and others like Trevi and Orvieto. Incredible scenery at the Marmore Waterfalls. Corso Vannucci, a main street in the city, is completely pedestrianized.

03 Marches (Marche)

Sirolo beach

The eastern Italian region of Le Marche is sandwiched between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea. The city of Ancona serves as a port for the region of Riviera del Conero, which is known for its sandy beaches, rocky cliffs, and historic towns. Marche is like Umbria, but with the addition of the sea (the Marches have a coastline on the Adriatic Sea): Sirolo is one of the best beaches in Marches.

The Marches are known for their verdant landscape and charming medieval towns. The Ancona Cathedral, perched atop a hill, is a must-visit. I recommend checking out Ascoli Piceno, Macerata, and especially the lovely city of Urbino, which is among the best in Italy. Rossini, the famous opera composer, was born in Pesaro. The glaciated valleys of Monti Sibillini National Park and the fortified hilltop settlements are within the country.

04 Lazio

Civita di Bagnoregio

The Italian region of Lazio is located in the center of the country, and it is on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Rome, the nation’s capital and the city that once served as the empire’s administrative and political center, is the principal city of Italy. The Colosseum, a massive theater with seating for thousands, is one of the most famous remains.

The historic city of Ostia, located on the coast, is home to intricate mosaics and a theater. The Apennine Mountains are located inland and are covered in thick vegetation. These mountains also have natural parks, lakes, and settlements constructed of stone.

05 Abruzzo

Lago di Barrea Lake

The Italian region of Abruzzo is located east of Rome. It is known for its beautiful lakes, its coastline along the Adriatic Sea, and its mountainous interior. Most of its rugged interior is protected as national parks and nature reserves. In addition, it encompasses hilltop towns dating back to the medieval and Renaissance periods.

In 2009, the country’s capital, L’Aquila, was devastated by an earthquake, which caused extensive damage to the city’s many historical monuments. However, there is a lot to explore, from the stunning medieval villages, such as Scanno and Santo Stefano di Sessanio, to the coastline, where I recommend going to the Caldoresco Castle in Vasto.

06 Molise

Monforte Castle

Molise is the second-smallest region in Italy. It is a mountainous Italian region with a stretch of Adriatic Sea coastline. Curiously, it is not famous, given that many Italians are unable to locate it on maps and are unaware of the attractions that can be found in the region of Molise. This is because, for a significant amount of time, Molise was a part of the region known as “Abruzzi and Molise,” meaning that it was not an independent state.

It includes a portion of the Abruzzo National Park in the Apennines mountain range and features abundant wildlife and hiking trails. Campobasso, the capital of the region, is well-known for the mountaintop Monforte Castle and the Romanesque churches that are located there. An ancient Samnite theater and temple can be found in the Pietrabbondante archaeological area, which is located in the north.
